Houses

Where to live - that depends on what you want.  One friend lives in Ipswich, and commutes 2+ hours each way into London. He has a large many-bedroom house in the suburbs.  We live in a small two-bed place on the outskirts of London, but 3 min walk from a tube station. It takes about an hour to get to the City*1.

You will likely choose a place to live based on where you work. Commuting more than an hour is not great.

If you are renting, it seems most places will have fridge, stove, washing machine, and maybe dishwasher.  If you are thinking about shipping yours over from South Africa it might not be worth it.  Consider the spares and repair if they break, storage and the cost of shipping bulky items.  Friends who recently arrived only shipped sentimental and valuable belongings - about one-eighth of a container's worth.

For gas & electricity, I'd recommend Octopus Energy - https://octopus.energy/. Renewable energy at reasonable rates, I much prefer them to the bigger energy companies.

*1 "City" refers to the City of London, also called the Square Mile. It's where most of the commerce happens.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_London
